Oxford United have been linked with their former star Danny Hylton as they look to step up their search for a striker before the transfer window closes.

Danny Hylton was part of the Oxford United squad that achieved automatic promotion from League Two in 2015/16.

During that campaign the divisive forward bagged 14 goals in all competitions helping the Yellows return to the third tier for the first time in 16 years.

Today the player has been linked to a move back to the Kassam Stadium, a move that would be very popular with the Oxford faithful.

Journalist Peter O’Rourke suggested that Karl Robinson’s side are interested in bring Hylton to the club and it is thought that initial enquiries have been made.

“Oxford United are lining up a move to bring former star Danny Hylton back to the club from Luton Town,” he announced on twitter.

Hylton has started just 10 games for the Hatters though much of his absence was down to injury earlier in the season and a recent suspension after he received a red card at Sunderland.

It remains to be seen whether Oxford could persuade Luton to part with the striker who is under contract until 2020 but it is certainly an avenue worth exploring for the Yellows.

He was in the League Two Team of the Year in back-to-back season in 2016/17 and 2017/18 but is clearly too good to return to the fourth tier. If any move did happen then surely it will be to a League One side, though Luton will probably want to keep hold of the popular striker.

D3D4 Football’s view

Trying to remain unbiased here but the return of a player like Hylton would be a massive boost to Oxford’s survival chances. The player is not necessarily prolific but has all the battling attributes required to make an impact.

His style of play is exactly what Oxford need and just having another quality striker would give Karl Robinson some options which he badly needs.

People might question his goal scoring record but the fact that he has created the fourth most chances (16) in the Luton squad despite missing so much time through injury and suspension just goes to show what he can bring to any side in League One.

This could, of course, be all pie in the sky but let’s hope something happens before the window shuts one way or another.
