Cambridge United will be promoted this weekend if they pick up maximum points at home to Stevenage.

Mark Bonner’s men are assured of League One football next season if they win due to Morecambe, who are fourth, hosting third-placed Bolton on the same day.

If means the U’s will open up at least a seven-point gap of the side in fourth by the end of the day if they can beat Alex Revell’s side at the Abbey.

Cambridge have not played in the third tier of English football since 2002 and spent a long nine-year spell in the Conference between 2005 and 2014.

The U’s current sit top of League Two with 77 points from 43 games. They will reach the magic 80 point mark with victory on Saturday and that will leave them seven points ahead of the team in fourth, whether it be Morecambe or Bolton.

Cambridge manager Mark Bonner is in his first full season in charge of a club and has worked miracles to get the side from the Abbey on the cusp of promotion for the first time since 2014 when they won the Conference play-offs to return to the Football League.

They beat Leyton Orient 4-2 at Brisbane Road on Tuesday, a game which saw star frontman Paul Mullin net goal number 31 in 47 appearances in all competitions this season.

Mullin is the division’s top marksman in 2020/21 with 29 goals in League Two. His exploits have seen the club name a stand after him after he broke the record for goals in a single campaign.

They’ll need him to continue that form into the weekend where all connected to the club will be hoping for a promotion party.
