Stevenage are locked in negotiations to sign Charlton Athletic midfielder Alex Gilbey on loan, D3D4 Football understands.

Both sides are keen to get a deal sorted for the player but are currently at loggerheads over the fee and wage contribution.

The Dagenham-born midfielder, who came through the ranks at Colchester United, has only made a single appearance for the Addicks this season which came against QPR in the League Cup.

He is hoping to find a move that will get him more game time and was linked with Lincoln City earlier in the window, but it now appears Stevenage are his only option before the transfer deadline shuts later today.

D3D4 understands that the clubs are negotiating to get a loan move pushed through but the two parties are still some way apart from an agreement on wage contributions and the fee.

If a deal cannot be reached the player will remain at Charlton until at least January which is understood not to be the desired option for both club and player.

Gilbey has made over 60 appearances in all competitions for the Addicks since signing for them from MK Dons in 2020 but has found opportunities limited under new boss Ben Garner so far this season.

Steve Evans is keen to add the player to his squad following an impressive start to the 2022/23 campaign which has seen Boro win four of their opening six matches. They currently sit fifth in the League Two table and face a trip to Gresty Road this weekend to take on Crewe Alexandra.
