Newport County manager Mike Flynn has dismissed rumours his captain Josh Sheehan will join League One Bristol Rovers.
Sheehan has been linked with a move to the Memorial Stadium but the Exiles boss is adamant his star midfielder is going nowhere.
Sheehan played the entire game of Newport’s EFL Cup second-round victory over Cambridge last night and Flynn was very clear about his captain’s future when asked after the game.
“He is not going,” said Flynn. “He was my captain against Cambridge and there has been no contact that I know of,” he told the Argus.
“He is a good footballer and that was the reason why I wanted to bring him here. He is playing really well but so are a lot of others.
Newport will face Watford after the Hornets beat Oxford United on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium and with more games on the horizon, Flynn is keen to add to his squad.
“There will be one or two more that we can squeeze through the door, hopefully,” he added.
With a condensed schedule, it will be important to have a competitive squad especially considering the injury problems suffered by the Exiles last season.
They face League Two new-boys Barrow on Saturday, a match no one in South Wales is taking lightly.
“I don’t think for one minute that it’s going to be an easy game; I remember the last time Barrow came here and they thought it was going to be an easy game.
“We did everything we could to get the game on, and they went and beat us. They were bottom and we were going for the league in the year we went up from the Conference, so I am not getting carried away at all.”
