Swindon are interested in signing defensive midfielder Jordan Lyden.

Lyden was released by Aston Villa earlier in the summer, following a serious injury, and is now in search of a new club. According to Alan Nixon, this could be Swindon Town.

Lyden spent part of last season on loan at Oldham Athletic where he made 14 appearances in League Two. He also featured in The Latics’ dramatic FA Cup third-round victory against Fulham.

The midfielder was spotted watching Oldham’s 3-2 loss against Rochdale at the weekend and it is rumoured that the Lancashire club are also interested in securing the Australian’s signature.

It appears, though, that Oldham are not the only competition fighting for Lyden’s signature. The midfielder has been training with League One Southend and they are thought to still be interested in signing the 23-year-old. Tranmere and Rotherham have also been linked.

Lyden has featured twice for Australia’s Under 20s and has also played for Aston Villa’s senior side four times. He was highly rated by Villa and is comfortable at both right-back and in a defensive midfield role while being known for his high workrate.

Should Swindon manage to secure his signature, they will have an excellent player for League Two level, though keeping him injury-free may be a challenge.
