Sunderland are targeting yet another striker as they set their sights John Marquis.

The prolific striker finished the season as League One’s joint second top scorer, after he found the net 21 times, 19 of which were from open play. Marquis has been a long terms target for Sunderland, indeed the Black Cats were linked with a move for the forward in January.

The Northern Echo now reports that a bid in excess of £1 million will be required to secure his services; a bargain compared to the £4 million Sunderland spent on Will Grigg.

The Black Cats are keen on improving their attacking options as they once again aim for promotion to the Championship. The Mackems are thought to also be keen on Plymouth’s Freddie Ladapo, who reportedly available for around £500,000. However, Marquis remains their key target.

Jack Ross is keen to ensure his team are strong in all areas of the pitch; their attacking options, in particular, let them down last season and the acquisition of Marquis would really be a signal of intent from the Wearside club.

The current sale of a number of shares to businessman Mark Campbell from current owner Stewart Donald is expected to be completed this week and it is hoped budget discussions will occur soon after, allowing players such as Marquis to be brought to the Stadium of Light.
