Walsall captain looks set to replace Lee Cattermole at The Stadium of Light.
The side from the North East has agreed on a fee for Walsall captain George Dobson, according to HITC.
Dobson is seen to be one of the most effective box-to-box midfielders in League One and is thought to be keen to leave Walsall, following their relegation to League Two. At just 21, the midfielder has captained the Saddlers and caught the eye of many scouts with his tenacious performances; his style is not too dissimilar to that of Black Cats legend Lee Cattermole.
“A fee has been agreed with a particular club,” Darrel Clarke told the Express and Star. “I’m not going to mention the club because it is not over the line yet. We’ll see how things develop.”
If they can agree personal terms with the player the Wearside club can secure Dobson’s services. He would be Sunderland’s fifth signing of the season as Jack Ross’ side set up for another promotion bid. At 6ft 1in, the youngster is strong and also useful in a backline if needed.
Former Walsall manager Dean Keates said of him:
“When I left him out when I changed things up early on, his attitude was absolutely outstanding in training.
“When he did come on as a sub, he forced my hand and I put him straight back in.
“He scored a great goal last weekend, was outstanding at Bradford and did well at Fleetwood.”
Sunderland’s League One campaign starts at home against Oxford on 03 August.
