Both Sunderland and Ipswich are hoping to sign free-agent full-back Luke Garbutt this summer but his personal demands appear to be scuppering a potential move, according to reports.

The left-sided player was released by Everton at the end of the season and he was thought to be on good money at Goodison Park.

During his time with the Toffees, Garbutt only made 12 appearances for the club and has spent much of his career out on loan in the EFL.

He spent last season at Portman Road, playing 28 times for Ipswich in League One where he scored five goals. The Tractor Boys are interested in bringing him back to the club with Sunderland also chasing the 27-year-old.

According to football insider James Goodwin, a deal for Garbutt is being held back by the new salary cap with the player’s demands currently exceeding what either club are willing to offer.

The salary cap means all clubs in League One will be able to spend a maximum of £2.5 million on wages although this season will see players already under contract and on high wages capped at the divisional average.

If Garbutt is to find a new club he will have to lower his demands, however, the salary cap may also see younger players given an opportunity in the first team.

Sunderland’s Jack Diamond is coming off a promotion season at Harrogate Town and is in demand but looks set to stay and fight for a place at the Stadium of Light with U21 players not included in the salary cap.
