League Two Stevenage are set to sign centre-back Kelland Watts on loan from Newcastle United, according to reports.

The highly-rated defender has spent the summer training with the Newcastle first team squad but he is now set to go out on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The towering defender has impressed Steve Bruce, who himself started out in the lower leagues, and the manager thinks it will really help the 19-year-old’s development if he has a spell on loan.

Stevenage have been busy building over the summer but were left disappointed by their opening day defeat at Salford. Dino Maamria will be hoping that Watts can push for a place in the back line while learning from the experienced Scott Cuthbert.

The Newcastle youngster has yet to make a first team appearance for the Magpies but he has been involved in a number of mathday squads.

Boro take on Exeter this weekend and will be hoping the neccessary paperwork is completed in time for the defender to be involved.
