Southend United have been linked with a move for the highly rated midfielder Jordan Lyden.
Lyden, who spent parts of last season on loan at League Two Oldham, was released from Aston Villa after picking up and injury. The 23-year-old Australian was highly rated at Villa Park but was unable to seal a new contract after sustaining a muscular injury that left him sidelined for three months.
The midfielder impressed during his time at Boundary Park and was part of the side that beat Fulham at Craven Cottage in the FA Cup third round. He was played in the centre of midfield alongside Christopher Missilou where he often dictated the pace of play and created chances moving forward.
Oldham fans are keen to see Lyden return to the North West, but it is Southend who are leading the race for the Aussie’s signature according to Alan Nixon on twitter. Rotherham and Tranmere are also said to be interested; a step up on League Two football.

Lyden is a versatile player, having represented Aston Villa at right back as well as in midfield in the Premier League. He has struggled to secure regular football during his career due to a string of injury issues.
