Grimsby Town and Southend United could be handed a relegation lifeline after rumours emerged suggesting a League Two club is about to be put into administration.
The Mariners are currently bottom of the Football League but any club that goes into administration is automatically deducted 12-points. This would change the complexion of the battle to avoid the drop.
D3D4 Football understands a side in League Two have built up debts close to £30 million and are considering putting the club into administration.
It has long been expected that the COVID crisis would hit lower league clubs extremely hard leaving many clinging onto existence, but as of yet no side have entered administration since the pandemic began.
Dropping out of the EFL is bad from a financial perspective even in normal times but given the current economic situation within football, relegation now could be disastrous.
Due to the sensitivity of the situation, no club will be specifically named but if this transpires to be the case, it is yet more evidence that League One & Two clubs should have received more help to ride out the pandemic.
With less than 10 games left of the current campaign, many were hoping all clubs would finish the season unscathed but this may end up not being the case.
The current season is due to end on May 08 and will have seen the entire season played out without fans being allowed to attend games.
