Jack Payne has turned down an offer of a new contract at Swindon Town amidst interest from League One clubs, D3D4 Football understands.

The ex-Lincoln City player who primarily plays as an attacking midfielder signed for Swindon on a free transfer in 2019 after failing to adapt from Danny Cowley’s style of play to that of Michael Appleton.

He went on to thrive last season at Swindon under the guidance of Ben Garner but hope of the Robins keeping the 27-year-old appear to be diminishing.

D3D4 Football understands that both Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday are interested in bringing the creative midfielder to their respective clubs and the player is currently considering his options.

Payne appeared 88 times for the Robins, scoring 17 goals across two campaigns but was unable to help prevent their relegation in 2020/21 sparked by off-the-field problems.

Last season Swindon fell to Port Vale in the play-off semi-finals with Jack Payne scoring his penalty in the shootout defeat. The Robins finished sixth in the table after 46 matches but were defeated in the postseason by the side who would eventually win promotion at Wembley against Mansfield.

A host of clubs are thought to be interested in Payne with Ben Garner’s new side, Charlton, thought to be one of them. Other clubs will now be alerted to his decision as interest in the 27-year-old is expected to increase.
