Salford City are close to signing former Bolton Wanderers captain David Wheater.

Wheater left the troubled Lancashire side this summer and looked destined for a move to Scotland, but it now appears the free agent is speaking with the newly-promoted League Two side.

Wheater had been attracting interest from Kilmarnock and Rangers but according to Bolton News, the defender was reluctant to move his family to Scotland and would instead prefer to stay in the North West.

Indeed, Wheater has been with Wanderers for nine years and would prefer to remain at the University of Bolton Stadium, but the club are unable to give the defender the assurances he wants due to their ongoing financial situation and pending takeover.

Salford have been flexing their financial muscle so far this summer as they continue to bring together a potential promotion-winning side. Indeed, the newcomers are favourites to win League Two in the coming season and signing a central defender with a wealth of experience at a higher level will be seen as a key piece of transfer business.

Wheater has been outspoken about the difficulties of playing for Bolton over the last season and will be relishing the opportunity to play for a financially stable club. He was close to signing for Kilmarnock, having trained with the East Ayrshire side, but has rejected that deal to stay closer to home.
