Salford are leading the race to sign Sunderland striker Will Grigg, according to reports.

Grigg has found life difficult at the Stadium of Light, following the £4 million transfer from Wigan last year.

According to Alan Nixon, Salford have offered to pay part of Grigg’s wages and are outbidding League Two rivals Swindon Town. The Ammies recently had a cash injection of £2.5 million from their owners and are keen to use this money to put together a promotion bid in the second half of the season.

According to The Shield’s Gazette, The Ammies are offering to pay £5,000 per week in order to secure this deal. Sunderland, meanwhile, are keen to ensure he doesn’t end up with a League One rival.

A signing of this stature would be a real sign of intent from City, who currently sit 13th in League Two. They are nine points outside the playoffs as it stands.

Grigg has experience in the Championship with Wigan and on the international stage with Northern Ireland. The 27-year-old joined the Black Cats for £4 million last January but has only managed to find the net 5 times in 37 league appearances. His career away from Sunderland has been more impressive; he netted 53 times in 133 league appearances for Wigan.
