Salford City have revealed they received an extra £2.5m investment from existing shareholders over the last six months.

The League Two outfit are being heavily backed in a bid to push their rise up the Football League. The club is 40% owned by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim while other shareholders include David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil and Gary Neville and Nicky Butt who all have a 10% stake.

The club have enjoyed four promotions in the last five seasons but that has come at a high price.

Salford revealed, in their most recent financial accounts, that they received £2,441,655 – in what is understood to be interest-free loans – from their ownership.

The club have also created new shares on two occasions since then which has generated £2.1m, in July, and then another £400,000 in January.

As reported by the BBC, a club official said the money had come from existing shareholders and has been allocated to the football department and also to further development of the ground.

Salford have enjoyed a mixed start to life in the EFL, currently sitting nine points outside the play-off spots but they have reached the last eight of the EFL Trophy.

They face a home game against Northampton Town at the weekend.
