Rotherham United head a three-way race to sign Cambridge United’s record-breaking striker Paul Mullin, according to reports.

Mullin netted 32 goals as he spearheaded the U’s to promotion this season, a new club record for league goals in a single campaign. The feet saw Cambridge name a stand in the striker’s honour.

Mullin is out of contract this summer but has been offered a new deal to stay at the Abbey Stadium as Mark Bonner’s outfit head into League One for the first time since 2002.

According to Alan Nixon, Rotherham United are one of three sides interest in signing the striker following their relegation from the Championship.

They will face competition from both Plymouth Argyle and Bristol Rovers with the Pilgrims looking to add more firepower to an attack that netted only 53 goals last season.

Luke Jephcott was the club’s top scorer with 18 goals but his production tailed off in the second half of the campaign with his last goal in the 2020/21 season coming back in early February.

Bristol Rovers are looking to rebuild under Joey Barton in League Two following a disastrous year that saw them finish bottom of League One. Whether they will be able to persuade Mullin to stay in the fourth-tier remains to be seen, but he would be a marquee signing if the Gas can pull it off.

Rotherham are also linked with a move for Accrington striker Dion Charles but Standley would likely command a large fee after the 25-year-old netted 20 times in all competition last season.
