Portsmouth are closing in on the signing of Oldham defender George Edmundson.

The in-demand centre back has been the target of Rangers and Peterborough this summer and the Glasgow club have had 3 bids, the highest worth £600,000, rejected.

However, it is thought that these bids involved payment in instalments which was not suitable for the cash-strapped club. Portsmouth News have reported that a “significant” bid, matching the valuation of the player, has been made.

It has been reported that Oldham value Edmundson at £1 million, although Peterborough are said to have had a £600,000 bid accepted, with the inclusion of lucrative add-ons. This offer by Peterborough, though, is thought to be less than that tabled by Pompey.

George Edmundson won many accolades last season, including D3D4’s own InStat Young Player of the Season award for League Two. He excelled under the guidance of defensive partner Peter Clarke and made 54 appearances for the Lancashire side last season.

Edmundson was thought to be keen on a move to Rangers, where he is said to have toured the facilities, but the youngster may find Pompey an equally pleasing option given their stature in English football and the potential for promotion to the Championship in the not too distant future.
