Port Vale manager has responded to criticism from Ben Whitfield’s agent, following the midfielder’s move to Torquay United.

Whitfield joined the National League side on Tuesday and his agent, Dan Fletcher, said he was delighted to have negotiated the deal. He said:

“Delighted to have negotiated the transfer of Ben Whitfield from Port Vale to Torquay United.

“Sometimes you have to do everything to get a player away from a manager, even if it means taking a step back to go several steps forward. Our clients will always come first.”

Askey was very statesmanlike in his response to Stoke on Trent Live:

“I don’t look at social media so it doesn’t bother me one bit. If people want to criticise me then so be it.

“I think it (the transfer) is good for all parties. Hopefully, he can get playing and we move on. As we have seen tonight, I think we are stronger as a squad then we were last year and that is the most important thing. The only thing that matters is Port Vale.”

Whitfield’s move away from Vale Park made room for Jordan Archer to sign, who scored on his debut last night (03 September). Vale’s next game is on a trip to Newport County on Saturday 07 September.
