We asked a fan of each team give us their thoughts on the 2018-19 season. Have a read of their responses and enjoy!
1.In your opinion, how did 2018-19 go for your side?
A completely avoidable car crash. It really didn’t go well from the start. Pre-seasons poor signings and underwhelming friendlies led to a terrible start and winless in the first 11 games. A decent run after Christmas, led by Ruben Lameiras and Freddie Ladapo, took us to mid-table but inept tactics, substitutions and lack of quality in the squad brought us crashing back down. Derek Adams could not cope with the pressure and lost the players, the media, and most importantly, the fans. The two games v Blackpool and Bristol Rovers where we conceded last minute equalisers in both was the turning point. Ultimately, his sacking was too little to late and an earlier change would have seen us stay up as the players had lost all motivation under Adams.
2.What was your favourite moment in 2018-19?
Watching an in-form Ruben Lameiras, particularly his performance against Coventry at home. He looks unplayable in League One on his day and is a joy to watch.
3.What was your worst moment in 2018-19?
It’s hard to pick between the 5-1 loss to Accrington and the late winner scored by Southend to send us down. The former an absolute shambles from start to finish, the latter meaning we were 3 minutes away from staying up. We like missing out on things by goal difference!!
4.Which player impressed you the most on your team?
Apart from the obvious Lameiras and Ladapo, it has to be Yann Songo’o. Never will you see a man work so hard for his team. He did all the donkey work but got none of the limelight. He is an absolute warrior and come the end of the season, was one of a handful who actually looked like they wanted to be there anymore!
5.Which opposition player made the biggest impression?
I’d have to say Cauley Woodrow. Barnsley were certainly the best team to visit Home Park and I’d take any of their players, but Woodrow was different gravy.
6.What are your hopes for 2019-20?
To get a young and exciting manager in who is forward thinking, plays attacking football and galvanises the players. There’s a lot of speculation around Ryan Lowe currently and I think he’d be a great appointment. If we can sort that, and keep hold of two or three of our very best players, I think we’ve got a really strong chance of bouncing immediately back. I also hope we give Exeter a proper hiding! We can’t be associating ourselves with them for too long – we’re better than that!
7.Which area of the team needs most improvement for next season?
Defensive acquisitions (bar Kyle Letheren who should cement his starting place) are essential to stop us shipping goals but I think the team needs an overhaul. Solid centre backs are key – it’s unbelievable how much we missed Sonny Bradley this year. It would do the club good to start afresh and we are in a much better place heading into League Two now than the dark days of administration and ‘The New World’. If we can hold onto our attacking players, they will tear League Two up. I am actually excited for next season and I did not think I’d feel that this time a week ago!
