Norwich City legend Wes Hoolahan is set to join Cambridge United on a trial period.

Hoolahan is without a club, following his release from West Bromwhich Albion and has been without consistent football since leaving Norwich in 2018; he only made one substitute appearance for Albion following his contract extension in January. Cambridgeshire Live has now revealed that the Irishman is set to join Cambridge United on trial.

The attacking midfielder has a history with U’s boss Colin Calderwood from his period at Carrow Road, where he was assistant to Chris Hughton.

Hoolahan made over 350 appearances for Norwich City, scoring 47 times and has also made 43 appearances for the Republic of Ireland, his finest moment coming in 2016 when he scored against Sweden in Euro 2016.

The capture of Hoolahan would be quite a coup for Cambridge, who avoided relegation last season after finishing 21st (six points above the drop). However, there will be serious questions to be asked over the fitness and determination of the journeyman attacking midfielder, as well as concerns over his wage demands. He is set to start his trial next week.

The Irishman was named in the Football League Team of the decade back in 2015 and would certainly provide much needed excitement, if only for his stature in the game, should he be offered a contract at the Abbey Stadium.
