League Two play-off winners Northampton Town are interested in bringing former Bradford forward Shay McCartan to Sixfields, according to reports.

McCartan was released by Bradford City at the end of the season after netting four times in 22 appearances for the Bantams and Keith Curle looks set to make the attacking midfielder his first signing since securing promotion back to League One.

Northampton beat Exeter 4-0 in the play-off final at Wembley to cap a truly memorable post-season for club. Trailing 2-0 from their play-off semi-final first leg against Cheltenham, the Cobblers turned on the style in the second leg, winning 3-0 at Whaddon Road before thrashing Exeter in the final.

On-loan striker Callum Morton was the star of those games, but there is no guarantee Northampton will get the West Brom youngster back next season. If that is the case then Keith Curle is aiming to bring Shay McCartan to Sixfields, according to former agent James Goodwin.

McCartan, 26, has had a difficult couple of years at Valley Parade but showed his class during a loan spell at Lincoln City, helping the Imps secure promotion to League One in 2017/18.

He was also excellent during a four-season spell at Accrington Stanley, and Northampton clearly see a lot of promise in the versatile forward. McCartan is comfortable playing as a striker or as an attacking midfielder, while also being used in wider areas at various different times during his career.

He could be a good addition for the Cobblers who will be hoping to consolidate in League One next season after learning lessons from their 2017/18 relegation campaign.
