Northampton Town goalkeeper David Cornell is being chased by both Middlesbrough and Preston, according to reports.

The 28-year-old stopper has been almost ever present for the Cobblers this season and is in the final year of his current deal at Sixfields.

It has been suggested that Middlesbrough and Preston are looking at the stopper with an aim to bring him in during the January transfer window. Ipwich are also being linked with the former Swansea man but are not thought to be as likely to sign him due to interest from the division above.

Keith Curle is unlikely to want to see his first-team ‘keeper leave but he may be faced with a choice of getting a fee for him now or seeing him walk for nothing in the summer.

Cornell has been excellent for Northampton this season, conceding just 16 goals in 17 league appearances and he has kept four clean-sheets in his last six matches, notching seven in total so far in the fourth-tier.

The Cobblers do have Steve Arnold to call upon after the former Shrewsbury stopper recoverd from a hamstring injury should Cornell be tempted away.

Keith Curle’s side are currently on a six game unbeaten run and face a trip to Exeter on Saturday.
