Newport County are set to miss out on signing striker Saikou Janneh after the Bristol City youngster injured his knee.

The Exiles have done some solid business this summer but were hoping to add another forward with the loan signing of Saikou Janneh from Bristol City, according to the South Wales Argus.

This move has been cancelled after the 19-year-old picked up a knee injury. The young striker has been excellent in pre-season scoring four times for City.

The injury is a concern but Robins manager, Lee Johnson, is hoping it is not too serious.

“Hopefully that one’s not as bad as first feared,” Johnson told the Bristol Post after his side was beaten 5-0 by Palace.

“He had a bit of knee swelling and was actually due to go out on loan, potentially this week but they’ve had to pull that back due to various situations with his knee.

“He needs to see a surgeon and just assess whether that damage is serious or just a little niggle.”

Mike Flynn has been busy strengthening his Newport side following an excellent campaign in 2018-19 that saw the Welsh outfit miss out on promotion in the play-off final.

They kick start the new season at home against big spending Mansfield Town.
