Morecambe new boss Stephen Robinson is lining up a move to sign former Bolton Wanderers defender Ryan Delaney, according to reports.

The centre back was released from his contract by mutual consent after Ian Evatt and the player agreed to part ways and the Shrimps are hoping to land the Irishman.

The 24-year-old has played in League One before, making 62 appearances in the third tier over three seasons with Rochdale and AFC Wimbledon and could be a useful replacement for Nathaniel Knight-Percival, who left for Tranmere.

Delaney is wanted by the Shrimps, according to Alan Nixon, following his release by newly-promoted Bolton.

Morecambe start an exciting new era in 2021/22. They will be playing in the third tier for the first time in their history and have the highly-rated Stephen Robinson in charge following Derek Adams’ departure to Bradford City.

Cole Stockton and Toumani Diagouraga have both signed new deals at the Mazuma this week giving the club a huge boost and more announcements are expected shortly regarding recruitment.

Delaney could well be one of them after leaving Bolton. The 6ft 5″ defender, who started his career at Wexford, made 27 appearances and scored four goals over the last two seasons for the Trotters.

The towering centre-back could partner captain Sam Lavelle at the heart of the Shrimps defence next season as the club look to build on a magical 2020/21 campaign.
