Milton Keynes Dons and Crewe Alexandra are expected to fight it out with Salford City this summer to sign Notts County winger Callum Roberts.

The 23-year-old has been impressing in the National League this season and is now attracting the attention of several EFL clubs.

The player, born in North Shields, came through the ranks at Newcastle United and has also had spells at Gateshead, Colchester and Kilmarnock.

He netted 17 goals in 25 appearances for Blyth Spartans in 2019-20 but has had his injury issues this season with Notts County. He was taken off at the weekend after coming on as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat against Hartlepool.

County head coach Ian Burchnall admitted he was ‘devastated’ by the winger’s latest injury setback.

“I am more devastated for him and he is devastated too,” he told the Nottingham Post.

“We’ve got to work with him and try to get him fit and he’s able to stay fit once he is back.”

His injury concerns may put off potential suitors but according to football insider James Goodwin, MK Dons, Crewe and Salford are all interested in landing the former Newcastle man.

Both Crewe and MK Dons are guaranteed League One football next season with them both sitting in mid-table with no relegation or promotion concerns to contend with.

Salford are still hoping the can sneak into the League Two play-off picture after beating Stevenage 2-1 at the weekend, but a lot will depend on how they finish the season.

Notts County’s defeat on Saturday means they are 12-points behind leaders Hartlepool although they have played five games less.
