Stevenage manager Mark Sampson has admitted he is “really proud of everyone” associated with the club following the weekend’s victory over fellow strugglers Morecambe.

The game appeared to be heading for a stalemate until Scott Cuthbert headed home a corner with an aid of a deflection late in the second half. Stevenage we able to hold on to pick up a massive three points much to th delight of Mark Sampson.

“Today, I think everyone knew, was all about the result,” he said after the game.

“Sometimes in football, in the season or a tournament, you have got to find a way to win. Huge credit to the players, the supporters, all the staff and everyone connected to the football club to get ourselves over the line today.”

“It did not matter about the performance level, it did not matter about anything else really. It just mattered about getting three points. I am really proud of everyone at the football club today.”

Under the guidance of Sampson, Stevenage have started to turn a corner after failing to win any of their first 12 games in League Two but back-to-back home wins plus excellent points on the road at both Forest Green and Port Vale have helped move Boro off bottom spot.

With some important fixtures coming up against the likes of Scunthorpe, Oldham and Walsall the Stevenage boss was pleased that his side are now harder to beat and feeling more positive.

“I am really delighted we have done that and put ourselves in a much healthier position. We know where we are in the table. All we can do is get better from where we were. I have got to give huge credit to the players and the staff again. Things are moving forward for us.

“In the form table, we are moving in the right direction. That is all we can do, we were in a very difficult spot. Let us not beat around the bush, we were not in a good place. Getting a couple of home wins on the board, being more resilient and more difficult to beat away from home, it feels like a team now that can be very competitive in this division.”
