Peterborough United chairman Darrah MacAnthony believes Crewe Alexandra are League One’s dark horse team this season.
The Posh chairman admitted he would have tried to buy several of the Railwaymen’s talented squad if his side had won promotion to the Championship last season.
Instead, they were left on the outside of the play-off picture after the controversial decision to end the campaign using a points per game model despite only being three points off the automatic promotion spots.
The Peterborough chairman has seen his side make a decent start to the new season but the team he’s keeping an eye on might surprise a few onlookers.
“I picked Crewe as a dark horse,’ MacAnthony said on his Hard Truth podcast. “Their such a well run club with their youth and the academy and I said they’ve been together for two or three years now. The manager, the players, they’ve got a really strong spine.
“If we were in the Championship this summer I’d have tried to buy four or five of their players. They got some really really good young players who been together and once you’ve been together fighting in the trenches you become a better unit.”
“I just thought, in my opinion, Crewe are going to be dark horses this year.”
Despite losing their first two matches, Crewe have looked very comfortable in League One since being promoted last season and are now unbeaten in their last three games.
They managed to keep hold of all their key players this summer and MacAnthony’s prediction won’t be a shock to many Crewe supporters.
They face a real test of their credentials this weekend as they prepare to take on unbeaten Sunderland, who are yet to concede in open play this season.
