Stevenage midfielder Joel Byrom is hoping his side can go on a cup run this season with the competition kicking off this weekend.

Boro are facing a difficult tie in the first round proper as they host League One Peterborough at the Lamex. The Posh have started the season in fine fettle and currently sit third in the table despite defeat at Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

Byrom thinks the fans backing will important against such a good side and the 33-year-old revealed his passion for a competition that has been considered less important by some of the bigger clubs in recent years.

“I love the FA Cup, it’s one of the only opportunities for us lower league teams to test ourselves against the country’s best,” Byrom said in this column in the Comet.

I always remember the Newcastle and Tottenham games at home. The atmosphere was electric. If that was your first taste of football you wouldn’t have been able to tell who was Premier League and who wasn’t. We need that sort of atmosphere this weekend to help us start another cup run.”

Stevenage have started to improve in the league since Mark Sampson took charge and have lost just twice in the last eight games.
