Grimsby Town are closing in on the signing of their former striker Andy Cook.

The Lincolnshire club are keen on resigning Walsall’s Andy Cook, according to BBC Humberside.  Cook was present at Grimsby from 2012 to 2014 and made 73 appearances, notching 14 goals.

Though his previous period at the club was less than prolific, Cook had successful stints in the National League with Barrow and Tranmere. At Barrow he notched 38 goals in 48 appearances while bagging 49 league goals in 83 appearances at Tranmere. Indeed, he has been successful at Wallsall where he has averaged one goal every three games and was their top scorer with 18 in all competitions.

Grimsby were the fourth lowest scoring side in League Two last season and Michael Jolley will be making it a number one priority to bring a proven goalscorer, like Cook, to Blundell Park. However, it could be tricky for Jolley, as Cook still has a year left on his existing deal at Bescot Stadium.

Salford City are also said to be interested in the striker. Walsall have yet to receive a bid for the front-man and are keen to keep hold of him as the gear up to return to League One at the first attempt. Cook rejected Salford last summer and instead joined Walsall in order to prove himself in League One.

D3D4 can also exclusively reveal that the Mariners have spoken to two other strikers as their attempts to improve as an attacking unit remains one of thier top priorities over the summer.
