Sunderland are hoping to improve their limp attack by adding Sheffield Wednesday striker Sam Winnall.

The 28-year-old is being linked with a move to the Stadium of Light with Phil Parkinson hoping to add some much-needed firepower to his squad.

Winnall has a proven record at League One level having been a clinical part of the Barnsley side that won promotion in 2016. During that campaign, the Wolverhampton-born attacker netted an impressive 21 goals in 43 league games to help the Tykes progress to the Championship.

He was also prolific in League Two with Scunthorpe United where he scored 23 times in 45 appearances 2013-14 and would hope to get more game time at Sunderland than he is currently enjoying at Hillsborough.

His contract is up at the end of the season and he would prefer not to leave on loan in January which could mean Sunderland make a permanent move for him.

The 28-year-old said this week: “It depends on if I’ve got the option. That’s out of my control. Like I say, I don’t want to look too far into the future, I want to concentrate on getting myself into the team. That’s the most important thing at this time.

“I’ve got six months left on my contract so a loan move is irrelevant. That’s out of the question. I don’t know, whatever happens in January happens.”

During his time with Wednesday he has netted five times in 33 league appearances but would be expected to be more prolific in League One.
