Oldham Athletic are hoping to land former Hull City midfielder Jackson Irvine in January after the player was pictured training with the squad.

The 27-year-old left the Tigers this summer after three years with the club. During that time he made 107 second tier appearances and was playing at the same level with Burton Albion prior to this.

The Australian international has made 34 appearances for the Socceroos and the fact that current Latics boss Harry Kewell is a compatriot could be a key reason the player is training with the League Two outfit.

Oldham have shown a lot of promise this season and their most recent result saw them beat table toppers Newport County 4-2 at Rodney Parade.

In fact, the Latics have taken more points on the road (19) than any other side in the fourth tier which has seen them equal a club record seven straight away victories in all competitions.

They would be comfortably in the play-off picture if they could replicate this form at Boundary Park where they have only registered two league wins all season.

Harry Kewell could see Irvine as the perfect addition. The 6ft 2″ midfielder is combative and the former Celtic man would certainly add some grit in the middle of the park for Oldham.

The club’s counter attacking style has been a joy to watch at times this season and with the likes of Zak Dearnley, Dylan Bahamboula, Danny Rowe and top scorer Conor McAleny already playing well, this addition could give them a real boost.
