Forest Green Rovers have agreed on a deal to sign Peterborough striker Matt Stevens.

Stevens has been a longstanding target of Rovers and Football Insider has now revealed that the club have agreed on a fee for the 21-year-old.

Stevens has found himself on the fringe at London Road and spent last season well within the scouting range of Forest Green, at National League South outfit Slough Town. He has also spent time on loan at Cambridge City, Silgo Rovers and Kettering Town, while making a few appearances from the bench for Posh. United transfer-listed him at the end of last season.

It is understood that Mark Cooper has identified Stevens as a replacement for last season’s top scorer Christian Doidge and, should they agree contractual terms, will secure his services for just £25,000.

Peterborough chairman previously described offers for Stevens as ‘insulting’, saying:

“Clubs need to get real with their offers, Forest Green offered us £25k for Matty Stevens, a prolific goalscorer wherever he’s played on loan and that’s nowhere near enough for us.”

Presumably, a new offer for Stevens includes lucrative add-ons that have sold MacAnthony on the merits of allowing the player to join Forest Green.

The Green Devils start their campaign on 03 August at home to Oldham Athletic.
