Forest Green Rovers are still interested in signing Peterborough striker Matt Stevens according to Mark Cooper.
The Gloucestershire outfit are still in the market for a striker ahead of the new season after seeing Christian Doidge head north of the border to join Hibs.
Cooper has confirmed they are looking to fill the vacant number nine shirt left behind by the popular forward but was coy on where they currently are in the negotiation process.
“It’s just the way it’s worked out, really,” Cooper told Gloucestershire Live when asked if he is looking for someone to fill the number nine shirt.
“I wouldn’t want to pick nine after Christian.
“We are looking at a centre-forward. It’s been well-documented who we’re looking at, but nothing more to add.”
The club had a bid of £25,000 rejected by Peterborough United for Stevens with Darragh MacAnthony claiming the offer was ‘disrespectful’.
It is thought the Green Devils will return with a far improved offer in order to land their target. Matt Stevens has not scored many goals in the Football League but has been prolific in loan spells with both Kettering and Slough. The 21-year-old is a bright prospect who could thrive under Cooper’s system at the New Lawn.
Meanwhile, Cooper also confirmed that the club are still hoping to add a new goalkeeper.
“Lewis (Thomas) has done great in pre-season,” Cooper said. “He’s put himself at the forefront, but we do need another goalkeeper.
“We’re in the market, definitely, and that’s always been the case.
“We don’t need anyone else, we’re good all over the pitch now. You’ve seen that with our performance (in pre-season).”
