Fleetwood Town are ‘establishing the facts’ about an alleged incident following Saturday’s match at Barnsley in which the Tykes manager was left requiring medical treatment.
The incident happened in the tunnel after the game between Barnsley FC and Fleetwood Town in League One. Following the home sides 4-2 victory Daniel Stendel could be seen having a heated exchange of words with Barton as the pair shook hands at the final whistle.
It would appear the argument continued in the tunnel and led to a facial injury being sustained by the Barnsley boss.
Today the Oakwell club have lodged a complaint to the EFL and FA and have confirmed that South Yorkshire Police are still being aided with their enquiries.
As of yet, Fleetwood Town have remained silent merely stating that they are ‘establishing the facts’ whilst no arrests have been made.
Barton joined the Trawlermen during the summer following an 18-month ban due to breaching betting regulations. He is well known for his fiery character and he has been in trouble several times during his footballing career.
His future remains in doubt until the investigation is concluded but it is difficult to see how this can end in a positive way.
The former Manchester City and Newcastle midfielder has done a very solid job in his first campaign in the dugout with Fleetwood set to finish in the top half of League One.
The D3D4 take
If it transpires that Joey Barton is guilty of assaulting Daniel Stendel then there is no way he will be staying at Fleetwood. Considering the job he has done, this would be a shame but there has to be a zero tolerance approach violence of this nature.
Barton is clearly a bright man but if he cannot control his temper then it is difficult to see a future for him in the game.
