1. The Millers should learn to finish teams off when they’re on top
A total of 22 efforts on goal to Alex’s three tells the story of one of the most one-sided games I’ve witnessed for many a year.
An excellent Millers display was ruined by some woeful finishing with Smith, Ogbene & substitute Ladapo the chief culprits.
2. Someone is due a hammering
Excuse my bias but it’s a recorded fact that Rotherham have statistically had the most shots at goal of any team in this season’s third tier & by the law of averages they are going to start going in the goal rather than the stand. By that logic, someone is due a hammering and we just need to find our clinical edge for that to transpire, sooner rather than later if you please.
3. How did the Millers survive without Ollie Rathbone?
When we eventually signed Ollie he came to the NYS with a glowing reputation but I wasn’t at all convinced as he was playing at recently relegated Rochdale whose fans were genuinely sorry to see him go.
I’m sold now, Ollie is perpetual motion in a Red shirt, never stops pressing, tackling, putting his side on the front foot & has a terrific shot & an eye for goal. He will be a key man for Paul Warne’s men for the rest of the season.
4. Game management continues to be a problem for the Millers
A plethora of late goals conceded went a long way in relegating the Millers in last season’s Championship & this season this trait seems to have continued with late goals conceded at Wigan & at home to Wednesday & Crewe costing points that could be vital come May.
As the 75-minute mark came Warne’s troops retreated to deep defending & looking to catch Alex on the break with another substitution disaster class in bringing off the excellent Grigg & introducing the out of form Ladapo who skied a golden chance from ten yards seconds before the Crewe penalty that led to the equaliser. Hindsight eh?
5. Crewe Alexandra aren’t very good
For a club like Alex with a reputation of bringing up their players to play the right way from their academy downwards, I was very disappointed with their tactics today. Every throw-in, free kick, or goal kick seemed to take an age, in fact, keeper Jaaskelainen was booked for time wasting in the first half. For the first 82 minutes, they didnt muster a threat at all & the Millers should have been out of sight long before Chris Porter’s 91st-minute penalty which earned Millers defender Wes Harding a second yellow card & dismissal.
