Exeter City are closing in on a loan deal to bring Bristol City goalkeeper Max O’Leary to St James Park, according to reports.

The 25-year-old was linked to MK Dons earlier in the summer but with the Buckinghamshire club securing the services of keeper Jamie Cumming on loan, it now appears the Grecians are favourites to land the Robins stopper.

O’Leary has amassed 36 Championship appearances whilst at Ashton Gate but is expected to head out on loan again this season with Bristol Live reporting Exeter as the most likely destination.

The goalkeeper made 30 league appearances in the third tier for Shrewsbury Town during the 2019/20 season when on loan with the Shropshire club and Exeter are hoping to bring that experience to Devon.

With Cameron Dawson now back at Sheffield Wednesday after helping Exeter win promotion last season, the club are in need of a starting stopper for the coming campaign. O’Leary is seen as an ideal signing given the club will be unable to afford to bring Dawson back as Matt Taylor confirmed earlier this summer.

Exeter are yet to make a signing ahead of the new campaign but still have the core group that won them automatic promotion from League Two last season.

The Grecians start their campaign away at Lincoln on 30 July and will be hoping to add some new faces to the squad before the big kick-off.

They beat Truro City in their latest friendly with a comfortable 3-0 victory against the Cornish side.
