Swindon Town are set to sign former Middlesbrough and Cardiff centre-back Sol Bamba, D3D4 Football understands.
The 37-year-old is hoping to take up coaching post-playing career but believes he can still offer something on the pitch and is in talks to sign for the League Two Robins, with a one-year deal likely.
Bamba, an Ivory Coast international with 46 caps, made 24 league appearances for Middlesbrough last season in the second tier and spent five straight years with Cardiff prior to joining the club.
During his time in Wales the 6ft 3″ defender played 28 times in the Premier League scoring four goals and although he is coming to the end of his career that experience would be an important asset for Swindon.
The Robins saw Ben Garner leave this summer and sign for League One Charlton. They have also seen several players head to new destinations with Mandela Egbo opting to follow Garner to London along with JoJo Wollacott.
Northampton announced they’d signed Akin Odimayo yesterday meaning Town are light at the back having also released Dion Conroy, now at Crawley, at the end of last season.
Scott Lindsay has taken over in the dugout at the County Ground and has been busy trying to put a squad together capable of matching last season’s play-off finish.
Tyrese Shade has arrived from Leicester, Sol Brynn from Middlesbrough on loan, Ciaran Brennan on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, and Cian Harries on a permanent deal following his release by Bristol Rovers are all new additions at Swindon with the season kicking off at the end of this month.
