Charlton Athletic are interested in signing former Fleetwood and Portsmouth full-back Callum Johnson, D3D4 Football understands.

The 25-year-old was released by Portsmouth this summer following an impressive loan spell with Fleetwood Town during the 2021/22 campaign.

The former Accrington man would be an ideal addition to Ben Garner’s squad and is suited to playing the kind of attacking style preferred by the former Swindon Town boss.

Johnson was a key player at Highbury last season, helping the club climb away from the drop zone with some impressive displays down the right-hand side.

Only Paddy Lane (17) put in more accurate crosses than Johnson (16) for the Cods during the 2021/22 season and he chipped in with four goals including important late equalisers against both AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth Argyle. He also won 68 tackles and made 191 interceptions and bagged three assists for Fleetwood during the course of the season.

His ability to win possession high up the pitch, doing so 34 times in the opponent’s half last season, will be a sought-after commodity and D3D4 Football is aware of a number of League One clubs hoping to pip the Addicks to his signature.

The London club recently bagged Mandela Egbo, which could allow other sides a look in should Ben Garner think he has now enough cover down the right.

As reported by D3D4 yesterday, Charlton have also been in contact with attacking midfielder Jack Payne after the 27-year-old rejected a new deal with Swindon Town.
