Colchester United are eying up a move to sign a new stopper before the start of next season as they target promotion in 2018-19.

The U’s just missed out on a play-off spot following a poor run near the end of the campaign and John McGreal will look to address one of his problem areas as he attempts to go at least one better next season.

Colchester are targeting former-Ipswich Town keeper Dean Gerken who has just been released by the Tractor Boys.

The 34-year-old started his career with Colchester and made over 120 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2009. He is thought to be the ideal addition following a season of inconsistent performances for the U’s other stoppers.

Neither Dillon Barnes nor Rene Gilmartin found a consistent level of performance during 2018-19 and McGreal is hoping to land the experienced keeper in order to add a more solid foundation in net.

It is not known whether Gerken has any other suitor but given that he is from the area, having been born in Rochford, it could be a move that makes sense for all parties.

Meanwhile, Colchester have also released Mikael Mandron and Ryan Gondoh as they look to reshape the side for next season.
