Charlton Athletic will need to significantly improve their bid to sign Exeter City winger Joel Randell if they want to complete the deal this January, according to Grecians boss Matt Taylor.

The London club have had two bids turned down for the starlet and will need to improve their offer by a considerable amount if they want the player before the end of the winter window.

Joel Randall is one of many top prospects to come through the Exeter academy and he has been one of the best players for the League Two side this season.

Charlton are unsurprisingly interested in bringing the player to the Valley but bids in the region of £300,000 have been rejected by the Devon club.

Speaking ahead of Exeter’s match against Stevenage this weekend Matt Taylor made it clear the club won’t allow Randall to leave for less than his true value.

“Joel is still our player and I expect him to be our player at the end of the window,” Taylor said.

“There has been interest but we have a certain valuation for Joel and one that reflects what we has done this season and what he will do in the future as we know he will be a top, top, player but I expect him to be our player unless something very worthwhile comes in.”

“Unless someone comes in with an offer we take seriously or is a significant offer, then we expect him to be our player. How long we can keep him within our ranks will depend on what happens this season and how the season ends, as we expect him to be a high calibre player and if he does leave us, it will be for a significant amount of money.”

The League Two club value Randall at around £1 million with the winger netting eight times and notching five assists this season so far. He is performing better at this stage of his career than Ollie Watkins, probably the most famous player to come through Exeter’s ranks in recent years, a point not lost on Matt Taylor.

“His stats are better than Ollie’s at this stage which shows just how highly we rate him. I am not going to say he’ll go on to play at the top level like Ollie but he has certainly got the potential to do so, and so the valuation has to be similar to what we got for Ollie.”

Charlton host struggling Swindon at the Valley this weekend having only managed one win in their last seven games in League One.
