Charlton are being linked with a move for Gillingham top scorer Tom Eaves, who finished last season on 22 goals in all competitions.
Charlton are keen to find a regular goalscorer, as they never really replaced Karlan Grant following his move to Huddersfield in January and were too reliant on Lyle Taylor. Grants supposed replacement – Josh Parker, never really hit the ground running and has been released by the Addicks. This means that Taylor is the only striker at the London club.
Charlton, who have ongoing financial issues, are expected to have one of the smaller budgets in the Championship and Eaves would merit a very efficient and cost-effective attacking option. Kent Sport suggest that Eaves has been given the opportunity to start pre-season with the London club. This is to allow Bowyer and his coaching staff to get a closer look at the striker and determine if the 27-year-old is ready for the move into Championship football.
He had spent six years with Bolton in the second tier but never broke into the Trotters first team during that time.
Eaves started his career at Oldham and has had loan spells at many League One and Two clubs including Shrewsbury, Rotherham, Yeovil and Bury. For many of the sides he played for, his scoring record has been sub-par but he really found form at Gillingham, where he has notched 38 goals in 69 league games.
