Charlton manager Lee Bowyer is expecting big things from young winger Alfie Doughty this season as Celtic have a second bid rejected.
Sources in Scotland reported earlier this week that the Scottish giants have had a bid, thought to be in the region of £650,000, turned down by the Addicks for the 20-year-old as the London club continue their determined efforts to keep hold of their prized asset.
It is the second bid the club have now rejected from Celtic and with good reason. Doughty was on the scoresheet in Charlton’s 2-0 opening day win at Crewe and Lee Bowyer is expecting him to shine in the third tier this season.
“He [Doughty] should get double figures – because he will get in those positions a lot,” Bowyer said.
“He went through one on one in the cup game and unfortunately he missed. But at the weekend he had that chance and took it. He should get double figures, easily.”
Bowyer is delighted the work he is putting in on the training ground is having a positive effect on the players, in particular, the way Doughty finished at Gresty Road was an indication the youngster is willing to learn.
“Before I’d said he needed to improve in the final third and his end product – the pleasing thing for me is the way he took his goal. He wouldn’t have done that before – just passed it into the corner. It’s something I work with them on all the time and it just shows they are learning.
“Alfie taking his goal the way he did shows he’s learning. Macca [Macauley Bonne] did the same when he took a touch and passed into the corner against Wigan.”
Doughty’s contract runs out in June and the club are really hoping the winger signs a new deal at the Valley.
“The only thing I hope does change is he signs a contract,” added Bowyer.
Charlton are hopeful a takeover will be concluded with Danish businessman Thomas Sandgaard confident he can conclude a deal despite a court injunction put in place by rival bidder Paul Elliott.
Sandgaard, who was recently in the UK, has returned to the United States after reportedly submitting proof of funds to the EFL. He is now awaiting approval.
