Burton Albion are targetting Bristol City winger Johnny Smith, as they seek to change their fortunes in League One.
According to Alan Nixon on Twitter the move would see the 23-year-old join The Brewers on loan until the end of the season, cutting short his time at Swindon Town.
This would be Burton’s second signing of the transfer window involving a link to Oldham Athletic; they have also confirmed the signing of Tom Hamer.
Albion assistant manager Dino Maamria was in charge of the Latics last season and worked closely with both Hamer and Smith. The pair performed well under Maamria with the latter going on to gain League One experience with Swindon this year.

Having started his career at Wrexham, Smith joined Bristol City in 2016 and has since spent time on loan at Cheltenham Town, AFC Fylde, Tranmere Rovers and Oldham Athletic, before joining Swindon at the start of the season.
Smith particularly impressed during his time with the Latics, where he scored 11 times in 32 appearances and contributed 6 assists.
Burton are currently bottom of League One with a miserable 16 points from 24 games. Their new management duo of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Dino Maamria are working to change the fortunes.
Their new signings will have to wait for their first outing as this weekend’s fixture against Blackpool has been cancelled due to several Covid-19 cases at the club.
